Some 3,000 Homeless Youth Attend Chicago’s Public Schools
The demographic breakdown as of June 2012 for homeless students is 14,639 black, 2,015 hispanic, 270 white and 13 Asian.
Former Mayor Richard M. Daley had set a deadline of 2012 to wipe out the bulk, if not all, of homelessness in a city long known for the problem in a 10-year-plan announced during relatively good economic times.
But the realities of a big city, a sharp spiral in the country’s – to say nothing of the state’s and city’s – economic picture and an overhaul of public housing here, combined to thwart the vision of a mayor that some had ridiculed at the time of the promise for making a public relations stunt.
Now that that plan is due to sunset this year, Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s team is readying a new version, called Plan 2.0, to address a stubborn problem that saps city resources while serving to ostracize a large part of a city’s population.
